The two-act comic opera L'elisir d'amore (The Elixir of Love) by Gaetano Donizetti was written hurriedly in only six weeks. Der Freischütz includes rustic choruses, marches, dances, airs, and arias in Italian style. Now only five out of his seventy operas survive. His compositional style proved influential for future Italian opera composers, most notably Verdi. During his last years he suffered from dominating fits of despondency, and he had become almost a wreck when he died in 1847.
