The rest of his time he parlayed into his greatest passion: food. The mind turned instantly towards Scotland, and waited expectantly for the magic of some Ossianic adventure. Rossini returned to Bologna and became the musical director of ‘Teatro di San Carlo’ and the ‘Teatro del Fondo’ in Naples. There is nothing but purity and simplicity in every note; not an atom of embellishment, just genius in all its primitive innocence; genius which, if I may be permitted the expression, is still virginal I adore everything in Tancredi, even a curiously archaic suggestion which I detect here and there in the melodic line of some of the songs; they seem to retain something of the form which was familiar to Paesiello and to Cimarosa those long, shapely phrases which some how manage to elude us only too easily, enchanting the imagination ... and escaping, ensnaring the soul ... and vanishing!

ROSSINI, GIOACHINO ANTONIO (1792-1868), Italian musical composer, was born at Pesaro on the 29th of February 1792. Rossini’s first ever opera, ‘La Cambiale di Matrimonio’ (The Marriage Contract), was produced in Venice in 1810. With florid lines, vocal embellishments, incredible speed and spontaneity, Rossini created some of the most unforgettable music in the operatic repertoire. In 1823 came "Semiramide", written for Venice, his last work in Italy; it was his thirty-fourth opera.

No voice whose timbre is completely incapable of variation can ever produce that kind of opaque, or as it were, suffocated tone, which is at once so moving and so natural in the portrayal of certain instants of violent emotion or passionate anguish. The teatro Carcano in Milan has proved to be ideal for music, and the acoustics are infinitely better than in the teatro Re; yet both were built with the same skill and care by the same architect, Signor Canonica himself. When the Count and Figaro have gone, Bartolo, who possesses the letter Rosina wrote to Almaviva, succeeds, by producing it, and telling her he secured it from another lady-love of the Count, in exciting the jealousy of his ward.

But this high-spirited, swift, airy, brittle music, with all its pre-eminently French qualities, might have been as dull as ditchwater instead of original and exciting, and ever producing one single novel of the quality of Candide, or even a handful of songs like those of CoUe or Beranger; but it is precisely this very phenomenon which explains France's unspeakable obtuseness in matters musical Representa tives of the old school give all their attention to the words of a song, and none of it to the turn to which those words are sung; the emotional content, for them, lies in the text, and not in the music. 1 If only someone would have the notion of squeezing a ballet into the interval between the first and second acts of every Italian opera which is performed at the Louvois, thus warding off the headaches and the fainting-fits which tend to develop during Act n, the Louvois would prove as popular as it is interesting, and the Theatre Francais would be doomed.

After L'Italiana he wrote Il Turco in Italia (1814; The Turk in Italy) for the Milanese and a cantata for Princess Belgioioso, "one of the most likeable of protectresses," as the French novelist Stendhal referred to her. In Naples, this finale came in for a certain amount of criticism on account of its length; but the Milanese, more patient by nature, seemed to enjoy it. The poet Sografi has written a charming little play in one act, based on the adventures and the vanities of an operatic company of this type; among the characters involved, I remember especially a German tenor without a word of Italian who provides the most uproarious comedy, and the whole thing is worthy of Regnard, or even of Shakespeare.

Her art appears to be infinitely perfectible; its miracles grow daily more astonishing, and nothing can henceforth stop its power over the audience from growing progressively more binding. In 1810, the Milan Conservatoire had failed to produce a single distinguished pupil. I wrote the overture of Otello in a small room of the Palazzo Barbaja, where the baldest and rudest of directors had shut me in. The Festivals main aim is to draw the stars of world ballet to Russias cultural capital.

He had already realized the importance of the German school of composition, perceiving the new elements by which Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart had enriched music. It's not like Dubal is comparing Rossini to Lady Gaga. It is still unclear whether Rossini was 14 or 18 when he wrote it; what is beyond doubt, however, is the anticipation of great things to come. So is Frederick Loewe, who worked with his librettist Alan Jay Lerner to write My Fair Lady and other distinguished musical comedies.

New fabrics are lighter weight, more stain resistant and have better drape.
