In August 1750, on a journey back from Germany to London, G. This was a golden age for Russian classical music. I have to say that the music is not difficult, quickly and easily learned and a whole lot of fun. So is Frederick Loewe, who worked with his librettist Alan Jay Lerner to write My Fair Lady and other distinguished musical comedies. Semiramide, in contrast, is a more human character. Venetian dialect-poet and song-writer, satirist and patriot.

A successful opera, in Italy, will normally enjoy a run of some thirty successive performances, which is about the number of times that it is profitable to listen to an opera of average competence. 1 There is a performance on every day of the week with the exception of Friday, the day of our Saviour's death, and with the further excep tion, in lands under Austrian domination, of about seventeen miscel laneous birthdays, death-anniversaries, etc., of the present living and last three dead Austrian Emperors or Empresses.

Set in a 21st Century Rossinian Disneyland- style theme park. Yet few of us have actual experience of extreme emotions, whether tragic or farcical; whereas we meet young lovers every day. Edward Bairstow was born in Huddersfield in 1874. LA GAZZETTA, Naples 1816, estate; demi-failure. It was revived at Pesaro in 1986 with Katia Ricciarelli, Marilyn Horne and Chris Merritt. Rossini has woven, for his especial delight, exquisite music about an abominable theme; he responds to tMs challenge by enjoy ing the music wMle he can, and by paying as little attention to the story as he can manage; and if some dismal critic were to come and point out the blemishes in the object of Ms pleasure, he would take to his heels and run, as though from a seccatore 2 of the most intolerable variety.

He first came to prominence in 1968 with his dramatic cantata The Whale, based on the Old Testament story of Jonah. French classical theater had been the preeminent model for drama in much of Europe; but when the German Romantics began to explore and translate his works, they were overwhelmed. He liked to host dinner parties for his friends, among whom was Franz Liszt, another famous composer. You may be thinking of the "Royal Fireworks Music", a suite, not a symphony, which was written by Handel, or (a long shot) a short orchestral piece by Stravinsky called "Fireworks".

And what are your favorite Rossini operas, overlooked or not? Unfortunately, I do not know the operas which those fine old com posers composed; and in any case, where should I look to-day to find any voices technically capable of performing them? 1 I have heard nothing except one or two of their most celebrated arias', and I con fess that my attitude towards the majority of these great figures closely resembles my attitude towards Garrick and Le Kain; for almost every day I hear these actors extolled to the skies by men for whose judgment and intelligence I have the greatest respect; and yet, in the domain of art, I am tyrannized by a bad intellectual habit which I have imported from the field of politics namely, I am pre pared to talk without let or hindrance about any subject under the sun, but I will believe nothing except that which I have seen with my own eyes.

Italian singer, member of the original cast of Matilde di Shabran; 414. Le Nozze di Figaro (1787) Don Giovanni (1787) In 1813, when I was in Dresden, I once met Luigi Bassi, that wonderful old buffo, for whom, twenty-six years earlier, Mozart had written the roles of Don Giovanni, and of Almaviva in le Nozze di Figaro. When he composed Vltaliana in Algeri, he was in the full flower of his youth and genius; he was not afraid to repeat himself; he felt no urge to create powerful music; his home was the delightful province of Venetia, the gayest land in all Italy, if not in all the world, and assuredly the least tainted with pedantry.

AN APOLOGY 457 observation, which you believe to be so well-founded, should have checked me in my stride; and after such a warning, I should have stopped and argued out a prudent, modest, closely-reasoned judgment; it would, doubtless, have been in execrable taste, and wholly unfur nished with any exact knowledge of the subject under discussion; but at least it would have left intelligent minds unshocked, if only because such minds are indulgent towards the weaknesses of others; and I should have earned thereby the admiration of fools, for a fool admires no one so earnestly as a true dullard.
