If you are a Republican, you'd better be against a woman's right to choose and spending on social programs, or else. If you're a Democrat, of course, you're 100 percent for abortion rights and but- ter, not guns (at least rhetorically). Go against the grain on this issue, in either subculture, and you're disqualified instantly. Try to take off the intellectual straightjacket, and you're toast. In my own analysis—and I realize this is simplistic—at heart, “con- servatives” seem to be sex-negative, while “liberals” (like Bill Clinton, although a look at his record will reveal him to be to the right of Ronald Regan) seem to be a little more on the randy side—like who in their right mind would find Ann Coulter sexy, if you know what I mean?
The sheer vol- ume of hidden information, suppressed facts, distortions, lies, myths, and misconceptions that washes over us is astounding. Every day I read more material that undermines the consensus, har- poons big lies, sweeps dirt back out from under the rug, and shows the way things could be. My own assumptions are challenged regu- larly, sometimes hourly. There are days when I wonder if, as the title of the second volume said, literally everything I know is wrong. Keeping up with the deceptions is an ever increasing challenge.
Apparently a lot of people haven't learned that the proper reaction to speech you don't like or agree with is counter-speech of your own, not trying to silence the other person. The Internet has helped tremendously in freeing information. At the same time, it's unleashed so much info that it's forced us to sharpen our critical thinking skills. Who created the material we're reading? What are the sources they've used? Is what they're saying internally consistent? These are some good questions to ask about any mate- rial.
