How Products Are Made: An Illustrated Guide to Product Manufacturing, Volume 2

Welcome to How items Are Made: An Illustrated consultant to Product Manufacturing.
This sequence presents designated but obtainable details at the manufacture of a
variety of things, from daily loved ones items to heavy equipment to sophisticated
electronic gear. With step by step descriptions of methods, simple
explanations of technical phrases and ideas, and transparent, easy-to-follow illustrations,
the sequence can be helpful to a large audience.
In each one quantity ofHow items Are Made, you can find items from a huge range
of production parts: meals, garments, electronics, transportation, equipment, instruments,
sporting items, and extra. a few are intermediate items offered to manufacturers
of different items, whereas others are retail items offered on to shoppers. You will
find items made of numerous fabrics, and you may even locate items such
as helpful metals and minerals that aren't "made" lots as they're extracted and

DFM techniques do not speci®cally answer this question. However, a robust design can be de®ned as a capable design in the context of the work presented later. ) in the early stages of product engineering. The designer needs to know, or else needs to be able to, predict the capability of the process used to produce the design and to ensure the necessary tolerance limits are suciently wide to avoid manufacturing defects. Furthermore, the designer must consider the severity of potential failures and to make sure the design is suciently robust e€ectively to eliminate or accommodate defects.

Many designers have practical experience of production methods and fully understand the limitations and capabilities that they must work within. Unfortunately, there are also many that do not have this experience and, quite simply, do not appreciate the systems that they are supposed to be designing for (Oakley, 1993). For example, three aspects of engineering drawing that are often overlooked, but are vital in design practice, are dimensions, tolerances and speci®cation of surface ®nish (Dieter, 1986).

Designing for reliability There are currently three main approaches used in the pursuit of a reliable product (Stephenson and Wallace, 1996): . Reliability prediction (includes probabilistic design) . Design techniques (for example, FMEA or Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)) . Pre-production reliability testing (prototyping). Reliability prediction techniques are a controversial but e€ective approach to designing for reliability, as discussed later. FTA (Bignell and Fortune, 1984; Straker, 1995) and FMEA are established techniques that aim to determine the potential causes and e€ects of failures in components and systems.
